As winter approaches it’s time to rethink your skin care routine. During this time of year, you should focus on repairing the skin from prolonged exposure to the summer’s UV rays.
Ultimately, the drastic change in climate, the wind that causes that red rosy glow, and combined with the dry indoor heating, can causes skin to become irritated. The best thing to do to protect your skin from adverse effects is to get ahead of the game before the deep winter hits us!
Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise
It may seem obvious but moisturising is incredibly important and should be apart of your everyday routine.
Over the summer months a light moisturiser or gel based serum with SPF is important so you don’t feel like you’re wearing a mask that melts off as soon as you step out the door! However, in winter skin becomes dehydrated and requires different more nourishing ingredients than those required in the summer months.
When its gets cold outside the tendency to blast the heating in places of work and home means dry air circulates . This dry air is a recipe for flaking skin, the natural oils on your face get zapped- similar how skin feels after being exposed to an airplane air-con. To rectify this use a moisturiser that will feed the skin with the all important nutrients that will keep your complexion looking healthy and hydrated. Look out for ingredients such as glycerin, honey and hyaluronic acid which works as a barrier and absorbs water from the air and binds it to the skin.
It is still good to be aware of your skin type as this still counts over winter. Although you may need something more hydrating, if you have identified that your skin type is oily you will need to account for this when choosing a suitable moisturiser.
A trick to keeping your skin flake free is exfoliating. Using a gentle exfoliator on the skin creates a smooth and silky surface to start your base. Beware not to use more than once or twice a week as you may overwork your skin and irritate sensitive skin.
Don’t forget your lips– Chapped lips regularly occur from cold wind and dry heat.
Use a lip scrub which can be bought or made naturally. If you like to DIY make your own lip scrub by taking coconut oil and brown sugar mixed with peppermint oil or cinnamon. This will remove flakiness, has a lovely scent and is edible too!
What you wear on your lips can also dry them out. Wearing a regular cream formulated lipstick can dry lips out over the day, so it’s better to use a tinted lip balm or a long wearing gloss to keep lips hydrated and looking soft.
It may be colder and we may see a lot less of it but the sun, even in winter, has powerful UV rays and still have an effect on our skin. Want to avoid those dark sunspots from appearing on your face? Take time for yourself
Winter can take a toll on our well being due to factors such as the shorter sunlight hours, cold weather, less exposure to sun meaning possibly less exercise.
